Recruiting New Members
Leo-to-Lion Transition

Keeping members active and involved is the responsibility of every club member. Leos can encourage new members in the following ways:

  • welcome new club members by personally introducing them to current members;
  • befriend new members;
  • utilize the talents and interests of Leos. For example, a member who is artistic may appreciate the opportunity to draw a poster. A member who likes animals may gladly organize a service project at the local animal shelter. These opportunities provide members with a sense of belonging and achievement.
  • praise club members for their accomplishments;
  • involve every member;
  • nominate Leos for awards whenever they qualify.

Retaining current club members is just as important as adding new members. Leos will remain interested in the club if it:

  • is well organized
  • is financially stable
  • has a direction and a purpose
  • is dedicated to important projects
  • promotes a sense of trust among all members
  • keeps members involved
  • considers the input of members in club decisions
  • provides recognition for members' efforts

Observant Leo leaders will notice when members begin to lose interest in the club. If this lack of interest involves a particular club project, Leo leaders may need to alter the project. If members display a lack of interest in the club, Leo leaders will need to address the problem(s).

  • The following method may help to resolve conflicts which may arise among club members.
  • Define the problem - State the problem in writing.  Be sure the problem has been defined and is not just a symptom of the problem.
  • Uncover the facts - Request input from both sides of the problem. Obtain data from outside sources, too.
  • Organize the facts - This step is required when complex issues are involved.
  • Determine solutions - Consider various possible solutions while searching for the best solution.
  • Realize the consequences - Before deciding on a solution, consider the possible consequences of each solution.
  • Act on the solution - At this time, establish how you will know that the problem has been solved.
  • Evaluate your solution - Leaders should oversee the process to verify that the solution has been achieved.

There are other reasons why Leos choose to leave their club. Observant Leo leaders can help prevent the exit of some Leo club members.

Reason for leaving:  Disorganized club leadership
Preventable Action: The sponsoring Lions club or Leo district leaders can provide additional leadership training for club officers

Reason for leaving:  Inadequate orientation or induction ceremony
