Lions Story of the Week: Local Lions Give Independence with Hearing Aid Dog
We found this article at the Times-News Online. The Hendersonville Lions Club in North Carolina helped Kim Compton obtain Mario, a Lhasa Apso mix rescued from a shelter. But this dog is more than a cute face.
Kim is a longtime library employee and has been deaf since birth. Local Lions recommended her for the program, helped her with the paperwork and acted as her liaison throughout the process.
Dogs like Mario receive extensive training, and learn to alert their owners to a variety of sounds. Mario taps Kim on the leg when someone enters a room, when the phone rings and if a fire alarm goes off. Mario is the first hearing aid dog sponsored in North Carolina by a Lions club.
