Earth Day 2010: Nor Cal Leo Club Saves Water
April is Leo Club Awareness Month and today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Today, we’re taking a look at a the Nor Cal Leo Club in Redding, California. The group recently completed a residential water leak detection program, a relatively simple community service project with a huge impact.
Watch the Nor Cal Leo Club perform a water leak detection screening.
Water leaks are costly and waste one of Earth’s most precious resources. Out of the 400 homes screened, 26 had water leaks. Lion Ken Swanson taught the students how to find the water leaks, then the students canvassed residential areas to let consumers know they would offer this free service. The following weekend, the teens checked each home with the assistance of utility company employees who donated their weekend to help the kids. The Leos filled out a report with their findings for the home owners and each residence also received a free low-flow shower head.
Swanson said he hopes this simple project will be replicated by other Leo clubs across the country.
