President’s Service Blog: World Sight Day
As we wrap up this month’s Sharing the Vision Global Service Action Campaign, I want to share a video from my visit to Japan. I was happy to return to Osaka for Lions World Sight Day this month. I served in the Navy in Japan and visited Osaka for international convention, so I was excited to return as international president.
I am very proud of all the work Lions there are doing to aid the visually impaired. Judy and I visited the Nippon Lighthouse for the Blind, which provides training for the blind and visually impaired. During our visit, we had a chance to try blind table tennis, which employs the assistance of sighted people – Judy was a natural at the game! A US$10,000 seed grant was recently awarded to this impressive facility.
We also joined Lions at the Tennoji Zoo, where we dedicated a new exhibit and park adapted for the visually impaired. Judy and I had fun trying out the roaring Lion, which I’m sure will be an often-admired part of the exhibit.
