Lions in Sight Documentary Wins Award, Shines Light on Lions’ Work to Save Sight

We’re always looking for stories about Lions in the news. So we were proud to see that a documentary about a Lions eyeglass mission earned an award for excellence in broadcast news from the RTNA.

Journalist Peter Musurlian, an employee of the City of Burbank’s Public Information Department, received the RTNA Golden Mike Award for his documentary “Seeing Beyond Borders.” He shot the film while traveling to Mexico on an eyeglass mission with Lions in Sight (LIS) volunteers from California and Nevada.

Peter learned about LIS from Lion Marva Murphy, a member of the Burbank Noon Lions Club. When Marva asked Peter to donate his skills to edit video of an LIS mission to Nepal, he wanted to tell the LIS story from start to finish. So, he joined LIS on their next mission to detail the volunteer effort – and the benefit to the poor.

    I’ve asked for help getting glasses from the Lions Club, and was turned down. I was told my lenses are too expensive. I wouldn’t ask for help but haven’t worked in two years due to diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy. I’m trying to get disability, but I’m in government limbo. I have a lawyer trying to help me, now it is up to the government. My family is on a fixed income and can’t help. I tried churches to no avail, their funds are depleted.

    Thank you, Peter! What a wonderful story about why we are Lions! When that Lion mentioned that it wasn’t a lonely trip on the road because folks seeing the Lions sign on the truck honked and waved, and he knew they were Lions, I couldn’t help thinking THAT is the Lions story – Lions in every community ready to serve – and bound together through our worldwide efforts.
