Story of the Week: Lions, LCIF Providing Disaster Relief for Tornado Victims in U.S.

On Wednesday, a deadly tornado outbreak in the U.S. killed at least 280 people, left thousands homeless and caused millions of dollars in damage. As always, our members and Foundation are bringing aid to the people affected by this disaster.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded 15 emergency grants to districts in Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi and Missouri. Local Lions will use these grants to provide immediate relief supplies, including food, water, clothing and medication.

LCIF has also established a designated fund for donations, the U.S. Southern States Tornado Disaster Fund.  LCIF can accept donations by check, wire or credit card.  Please visit our Donations page  for more information.

I have started taking calls at my home or email me windizy@yahoo.com. I have found a resource that is calling us back and putting us to work. If you want to work please call me and give me dates you will be here and what you can do (electrical, picking up and cleaning up,ect.) and they have building permits and permission from owners who can’t afford these things but have put in writing we can do it for them through the church. They are willing to match us up and put us to work. The Lion’s club that was not good on waiting, please call me I hate to say it but I lost your number.

We are currently in final approval for replacing glasses and hearing aids for the all the victims of the 2 nursing homes that were hit, funding 2 local groups (Lafayette house) that have taken in people that are homeless from the storm, providing an undecided sum to each of the elementary school teachers that lost everything in their class and having a voucher day for victims on the last weekend of Aug. The hard part there is getting names and numbers out of agencies for people who really do need the money. I refuse to give your money to someone who was not affected. The list is coming along nicely and should be full by the projected date.

Anyone wanting to attend is welcome. Anyone knowing of names that should be added to the list should give the above number to them and have them call me to be added.

Please forgive us waiting to deliver funds. It is partially on my shoulders as to why. We wanted to wait until all those agencies that flock to a storm and donate and give were partially gone so we could pick up where they left off and get the people who were missed. There are so many who were given clothes and toothbrushes but now that they are getting in a home or apt. have nothing to eat on or with. Having to buy school clothes with unemployment wages and trying to replace everything you ever owned. This is what I have asked the club to wait for.

I am so proud to be a Lion! The power and the destruction of the Tornadoes that hit the southern states left people in a very vulnerable state of mind, body, and soul. Knowing that the Lions are there to help provide for those that have been affected really helps. When my district suffered from flooding last year, we received a disaster relief grant from LCIF. Watching how the local clubs, the district, and LCIF work together to help those in need makes me so proud that in a way I am a part of that. We really are a Beacon of Hope to those that need us. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your story! As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much. “
