Each year during May, we celebrate Lions Recycle for Sight month. We found this week’s photo at The Journal Advocate.

Sterling Lions Club Recycles for Sight

This photo shows members of the Sterling Lions Club taking a break after packing thousands of recycled eyeglasses. In 2010, the club partnered with the Sterling Correctional Facility and Logan Industries to recycle 91,556 pairs of eyeglasses that will give the gift of sight to those in need.

  • Sam Linder. First VP, The New London Connecticut U.S.A. Lions Club and Chairperson of the Club Eyeglass Collection & Vision Committees.

    The New London Connecticut U.S.A. Lions Club shipped approximately 2,300 pairs of used eyeglasses in late 11/2010 to The Republic of the Philippines to be distributed to indigent residents.

    And, in mid 04/2011, the Club shipped 8 boxes of collected glasses weighing approximately 180 pounds to ReSpecs in Los Angeles, CA. for recycling and restoration. In mid-06/2011, ReSpecs (which periodically advertises in The Lion) will be sending a check to the Club for the shipment. That money will be FULLY redistributed via the Club’s Community Fund for dissemination to exemplarary New London High School seniors who are planning to attend college and to The Center of the Blind (in New London).

    Our Club, Mount Vernon, WA in conjunction with 3 other area clubs in the Zone, have banded together to clean and sort thousands of pairs of eyeglasses. Two of our club members will be going to Paraguay this year, on a mission to deliver eyeglasses and perform cataract surgeries!

    We have been involved this year in recycling glasses, and up to this moment we have collected a total of 78 pairs that are ready to be taken to any needy person that is without a pair of eyeglasses.
