Lions in California Help the Visually Impaired Experience the Joy of Surfing
Our members improve the lives of the blind and visually impaired in many ways. In California, it’s all about heading to the beach!
We sent a film crew to capture an inspiring event hosted by the Encinitas Lions Club. Every year, the Lions give visually impaired people a chance to surf. Many participants have never surfed before, but come for the thrill of a new experience. It takes a team of 8 to 10 volunteers to make it safe for each blind surfer. Volunteers include experienced surfers, surf instructors and many Lions and Leos who just want to help out.
Each surfer begins with a lesson on land before heading to the ocean in hope of catching a wave. Jack Crabtree, a surfer and volunteer, told our camera crew, “It’s just an incredible sensation to watch somebody who can’t see smile and ride a surfboard. You can’t beat it.”
