Story of the Week: Lions, LCIF Supporting Famine Relief in the Horn of Africa

Right now, famine is threatening the lives of millions of people in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa. Our members are working to help the most vulnerable victims – children in a large refugee camp in Northern Kenya and Dadaab. Lions are also partnering with the Red Cross and UNICEF to provide emergency food supplies.

LCIF has given the Lions of Kenya a US$15,000 grant to support famine relief. Lions in Kenya also collected US$10,000. And our members around the world are rallying to help. Lions in Sweden are donating US$77,000. A Lions club in Germany has pledged to collect US$7,100. And Lions from Ethiopia are taking part in the relief efforts.

We’ve also formed a Lions Relief Team to coordinate relief efforts in Kenya. And LCIF has set up a designated “Aid for Africa 2011″ fund. Learn more about our famine relief efforts – and how you can give hope to those who are suffering.

I am so relieved to see us getting involved and will put a article concerning this in our district newsletter as we have had Lions asking. Good job. As usual we go where the need is and make a difference. Notice one of the issues is the measles in the camps, as most of these children have not been vaccinated.

  The Measles Initiative, a partner organization of LCIF, has moved 4 million doses of the vaccination to the refugee camps. Lions are not currently involved, but are working with UNICEF and the Red Cross on food provision and discussing other ways to help.
  
  Measles is a health issue that LCIF is committed to. LCIF is currently in discussions with the Measles Initiative and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on expanding our measles pilot program from last year that vaccinated 41 million children.

My club, Lions Club Of Mombasa Bahari in Mombasa, Kenya in District 411A has donated Kshs.50000.00 towards the Famine Relief. We will donate more on receipt of all the pledges.

Lions are doing a great service. This is a true motto of “I BELIEVE” (International President’s motto) and “TOGETHER WE CAN” (District Governor’s motto).
