Lions in Japan Rally Community Support to Keep a River Clean and Beautiful

Lions around the world work on projects aimed at protecting our environment. Our film crew visited Nagoya, Japan, to see how Lions there lead the way in keeping a vital part of their community in top shape.

Called the “Mother River” of the community, the Horikawa River snakes through the urban area and is an important resource for its residents. It is so significant to the people of Nagoya that a Lions club formed for the explicit purpose of maintaining the waterway.

The Nagoya Horikawa Lions Club brings together more than 2,000 people to clean up the river.  Several times each year 200 groups and 33 neighboring Lions clubs work together on this all-encompassing project.

According to Akio Ohta, a member of the Nagoya Horikawa Lions Club, it’s essential for Lions to get involved in environmental projects so that they leave a cleaner, healthier world for future generations.
