Story of the Week: Two Years Later, Lions Are Bringing Hope to Haiti

Renande Pierre-Louis remembers how the ground shook and buildings crumbled while an earthquake demolished her home and the homes of her neighbors and friends on Jan. 12, 2010. Even before the shaking stopped, Lions and Lions Clubs International Foundation mobilized to address immediate needs, providing food, water and medical supplies. As the weeks passed, Lions remained, erecting tent villages to house Renande and other displaced  people.

Haiti_New_HomeTwo years later, Renande and her family live in a newly constructed home, thanks to the generosity and dedication of Lions and LCIF. With the assistance of HELP, an international non-governmental organization, Lions and LCIF have built 403  homes, with an additional 197 underway. Lions have committed to provide a new home to each of the families previously relocated in Lions tent cities.

This month Lions will also inaugurate the National Nursing School, launch a school construction project and begin another housing project with a community center. Because of the generous donations of US$6 million from Lions like us, Haitians like Renande and her family are working to reclaim their lives.
