Photo of the Week: Washington-Based Lions Clubs Change Lives in Jamaica

When you reach out and partner with like-minded organizations, your ability to improve communities magnifies. Lions in Washington partnered with Great Shape! Inc. to bring healthcare and improved vision to families in rural Jamaica.

Members of the Seattle Bituin and Lake Stevens Lions clubs traveled with 40 other volunteers to Ocho Rios and spent one week assisting with the iCare program. Together they provided 1,800 eye exams, distributed 2,700 pairs of glasses, referred 175 patients for sight-saving surgery and saw 595 patients for blood pressure and glucose testing. During the three-year partnership, Lions have provided more than 18,000 pairs of glasses.

    We as members of Lions Club North Cairo District 352 would like to congratulate all members of the Seattle Bituin and Lake Stevens Lions clubs for doing such a great effort to correct vision problems by providing glasses for those who ‘re badly in need and lack the resources to purchase them. We thank such great clubs for giving us the chance for knowledge sharing because we hope to apply such a tremendous experience in our country to share building up for the future of our country.
    Especially we as a District 352 newly in inaugurate our district eye lions hospital project in Egypt.
    Thanks for technology for giving us the chance to interact together from different part of the world and to see much more success from different clubs.

    Of course, we couldn’t have been nearly as effective or efficient in our operation while in country if we had not had the helping hands of Lions Pat and Nancy Bucknell from the Lacey, Washington Lions Club. A long time Lion, Pat works many hours a month cleaning, cataloging, sorting and packaging donated eyeglasses at their LERC site in Lacey. Without the efforts of Pat and other Lions like him around the country, there would be no glasses to send with the teams!
