President’s Service Blog: Lions Fight Against Measles
On October 23, along with the Minister of Health Mars di Bartolomeo, I paid an official visit to the World Health Organization (WHO) Reference Center for the European Region in Luxembourg to learn about the progress of the WHO’s worldwide Measles Elimination Initiative – a group of international organizations including the American Red Cross, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the United Nations Foundation and Lions Clubs International.
One of the most important missions of Lions worldwide is the contribution to and participation in the Measles Elimination Initiative. Lions are committed to combating the death and disease caused by measles, and I’m proud to announce that this month, we successfully met the Gates Challenge by contributing an astounding US$10 million to help protect children around the world from blindness, brain damage, hearing loss and death caused by measles. For every US$2 we raised, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matched with US$1. This extraordinary achievement has made it possible for Lions to give children across the globe the chance to live happy, healthy lives.
