Palmer’s Blog: Changing Lives in Peru

In Peru, I had a very emotional visit to a clinic that treats children who have facial disfiguration. The clinic is run by Lions family of plastic surgeons, and is supported by Lions in Peru. There have been over 9,000 operations performed at the clinic on children from the remote northern region of Peru, all free of cost.

Besides meeting the young babies who would be operated on that day, I also met with children and young adults whose lives the Lions clinic has changed. Hugo, age 19, was operated on when he was 1 month old. Now, he is the musical director of a youth symphony orchestra. One little girl, operated on when she was just a baby, has one of the highest IQ readings the clinic’s doctor has ever seen.

These young people are now leading healthy lives in which they can follow their dreams, and I thank the Lions of Peru for helping them make those dreams possible.
