Celebrate International Day of the Girl
October 11 is International Day of the Girl, declared by the United Nations. This year’s theme is “Innovating for Girls’ Education.” A strong education is critical to the future of young girls across the globe, as it can help lift them out of poverty and give them the skills, resources and motivation needed to follow their dreams.
Celebrate through the Reading Action Program
We encourage Lions everywhere to participate in International Day of the Girl by organizing Reading Action Program projects that focus on girls’ education. Examples of projects and activities include:
- Read to young girls at a local school, library or children’s center.
- Collect and donate books to families and children.
- Organize a reading program that invites young mothers to read with their children.
“Girl Rising” is a groundbreaking film that tells the extraordinary stories of nine young girls around the world, and focuses on the power of education to change the world. You can arrange a screening in your community to help raise awareness of the importance of girls’ education. Find out how to host a screening through the Girl Rising Screening Kit.
How does your Lions club help young girls in your community receive the education they deserve?
