Recap: Lions Day with the UN

Lions Clubs International

On Saturday, February 15, 2014, Lions took part in the 36th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations (LDUN) event held at UN headquarters in New York. The event commemorated the long-standing partnership between Lions and the United Nations with a special emphasis on the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Over 450 Lions and guests from 25 countries attended the event representing the vast reach of our global network.  Large delegations from Italy, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Pakistan contributed to the international presence, along with UN ambassadors and dignitaries that attended the luncheon.

Lions Clubs International President Barry J. Palmer welcomed Lions by underscoring the important role they play in addressing the most pressing global humanitarian needs, including the eradication of extreme poverty through community empowerment. He challenged Lions to continue their efforts under the Global Service Action Campaigns, and other key initiatives that improve the lives of millions around the globe.

Adil Najam, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, spoke about the importance of globalized societies in the 21st century working together to achieve sustainable solutions. Dr. Najam also reminded Lions that the UN and civil society organizations must come together to achieve greater impact.

William Mou, the Chairman and Co-founder of Lost Boys Rebuilding Southern Sudan, gave a heartfelt account of his experience as a “Lost Boy.” Mou’s remarks were followed by a panel discussion on the ways that Lions are equipping the people of South Sudan with literacy so they can work together to build a more peaceful and healthy nation. The panel featured Lions Wendi Dwyer and William Mou.

The 2014 Lions Day with the United Nations was a very successful event. The program showcased Lions global impact and left attendees inspired to take action in their local communities.
