Dr. Sedef Önde, president and Global Action Team chairperson of the Izmir Goztepe Lions Club in İzmir, Turkey, was checking her Facebook page last November when smiling children caught her attention. Upon further examination, she found that they were students of Hasan Kartal, a teacher at a primary school in Diyarbakir. The smile was caused by the teacher’s dedication to his students and the creativity that he put into his lessons.

District 411B attained provisional district status in 2018 with 952 members and became a full district on July 1, 2020 after chartering seven new clubs with 575 new members and a net membership growth of 450. Its membership growth made it possible to surpass the 500,000 goal of people served at the beginning of the year to serving nearly 3,000,000 people that year, making an immediate impact on many more lives.

Our next finalist for the ANZI Top Club Service Award is the Oxford & Districts Lions Club in District 202E New Zealand. The original idea behind this service project was to deliver parcels of food to those struggling during the COVID-19 lockdowns. These parcels included essentials but also specialty items, such as new potatoes, during the Christmas season. Unfortunately, an extended COVID-19 lockdown delayed the start of the project. But the club did not lose its inspiration to harvest in time for Christmas and the project began in May 2020.

The 2020-2021 winner of the ANZI Top Club Service Award is the Jakarta Selatan Fun Urbana Lions Club in District 307B1! As a new club with just 23 members, their diabetes service project touched the lives of nearly 16,000 individuals. Indonesia ranks number six among countries with the highest number of diabetes cases, with about 10.3 million people in 2020. It is expected that approximately 16 million people will be living with type 2 diabetes in Indonesia by 2030.

As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc across western India, Lions of District 3234 D2 decided to intervene. This time around, the effects of the deadly virus were more severe, disrupting many more lives in unimaginable ways. So they formed the Lions COVID-19 Task Force (LCTF) with a participation of more than 100 clubs, determined to improve the lives of those affected.

The aftermath of such an event in northeastern Japan brought a group of environmentalists together to provide necessary relief to their community. Their common devotion to local habitats drove them to act. These shared passions also led this group to form their own specialty Lions club focused on ecological conservation.
