Dear Lions,

Disaster has once again struck the coastal region of western Indonesia. A tsunami, triggered by a volcanic eruption, struck the area at approximately 9:30pm local time Saturday, December 22, killing over 350 people, wiping out hundreds of homes and businesses, and leaving many people homeless. Because the tsunami was the result of a landslide from the volcano, instead of an earthquake, the tsunami warning system did not activate – giving no advance warning to the impending disaster. Rescue efforts are currently underway for people trapped in the rubble.

The tsunami swamped coastal areas filled with tourists ahead of the busy holiday weekend.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has approved US$50,000 in designated disaster funding to assist local Lions of district A1 and B1 in providing much needed early response relief.

We know Lions everywhere join us in sending their thoughts and prayers to the people affected by this recent disaster as they not only mourn the loss of loved ones, but also struggle to obtain adequate housing, fresh water, and food.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has approved US$50,000 in designated disaster funding to assist local Lions of district A1 and B1 in providing much needed early response relief.

Just recently, Lions responded in a most generous manner when flooding swept through southwestern Japan and a major earthquake in Indonesia. This latest disaster is a reminder of why we must always be ready and able to provide disaster relief at a moment’s notice – whether from hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, or man-made disasters. That is why it is important to support LCIF by donating to our latest fundraising initiative – Campaign 100.

The most ambitious fundraising effort in LCIF’s history, the goal of Campaign 100 is to raise US$300M by 2021. Campaign 100 will empower Lions to serve hundreds of millions more people by increasing our service impact, fighting diabetes, and expanding global causes to include childhood cancer, hunger, and the environment. Disaster relief remains an important focus of our service in communities thoroughout the world ensuring LCIF is there when the need is greatest.

Donations to Campaign 100 prepares us to respond to the needs of an ever-changing world.
